In happier days...

"But yet mathematical certainty is after all, something insufferable. Twice two makes four seems to me simply a piece of insolence. Twice two makes four is a pert coxcomb who stands with arms akimbo barring your path and spitting. I admit that twice two makes four is an excellent thing, but if we are to give everything its due, twice two makes five is sometimes a very charming thing too."
-Fyodor Dostoyevsky, "Notes from the Underground"

My name is Michael Lieberman, and I am a fifth year in the Mathematics Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan, specializing in mathematical logic and (I'd like to think) category theory. I was born and mostly raised in Minnesota (save for a nearly yearlong sojourn in Northeastern China), and received my B.A. in math from Reed College, that most liberal arts of all liberal arts schools. Since coming to Michigan, I have become intimately acquainted with the sweet, searing pain of the generalist compelled to become a specialist. Follow the links on the left for more.
