- 1 November: Arvind Nair (Tata Institute and UM) "Subvarieties of modular varieties and intersection cohomology"
- Abstract: A modular variety is the quotient of the symmetric domain of a Lie group G by an arithmetic group of automorphisms. A subgroup H of G also giving a symmetric domain gives a subvariety of the modular variety.
I will discuss results about their cycle classes and some applications to restriction maps in cohomology. The emphasis will be on noncompact modular varieties, where various compactifications and intersection cohomology play a role.
- 8 November: Gopal Prasad (UM) "Semi-simple Lie groups and some (transcendental) number theory".Abstract: I will describe how Zariski-dense subgroups of semi-simple Lie groups arise in geometry and arithmetic and how number theoretic considerations can be used to solve interesting problems about them.
